Interview: Nikki Kelly, Author of The Styclar Saga

My very first cheerleader on Wattpad was Nikki Kelly, who had just started posting her story: LAILAH, the first book in The Styclar Saga.

I was instantly addicted to her writing and fell in love with the characters, and her ongoing support has helped me keep going with my writing. So when it was announced recently that Nikki has been signed on to publish The Styclar Saga, I was so excited!

Recently, I interviewed Nikki to find out what she loves about Wattpad, writing and how she celebrated her publishing deal.

1. How did you find out about Wattpad?

I read an article in the newspaper about a young girl who had success with her story on Wattpad. I found the site and was amazed at what a fantastic and unique place it was!

Wattpad was the perfect place to introduce my story ‘LAILAH’ to an international audience.

2. How long did it take for your story to become popular within the Wattpad community?

Within six months of my story being live to wattpad it had racked up:

Over one million reads – fifteen thousand votes – three thousand comments!

So not long at all really!

And what was super lovely, is when a reader would finish the story they would recommend it to their friends on and off Wattpad. I have been very lucky with the support I have received from the readers. They were, and still are, instrumental in helping spread the Styclar word.

3. What’s your favourite part about the Wattpad community?

Most definitely the readers!! Not only is it incredibly exciting to be able to read all the comments they post in the story itself as it unfolds, but also how they reach out with their friendship and support.

It’s also very cool to chat to fans from all over the world, and hear all about what they loved about the story, how they interpreted it, and of course which ‘Camp’ they sit in… Camp Gabriel or Camp Jonah!

And of course, I love my ‘Styhards’!

4. Do you have a writing ritual? Eg, listening to music, drinking coffee, wearing lucky underwear, etc.

I actually have a few rituals…

I always make up a pot of tea (yup, typically British!) before sitting down to a long writing session.

I keep a hidden supply of skittles, gobstoppers and other sweets in my desk tidy – I like to taste the rainbow when I write!

The other slightly odd thing I have a habit of doing is listening to a couple of choice songs from the Rocky soundtrack, before penning a big action scene.

… And yes, before you ask, I float like a butterfly and sting like a bee!

5. Who are your favourite authors?

I like to read in the genre that I write, I am a big fan of YA Fantasy Fiction.

I also relish a bit of chic lit too (usually when I’m on a beach, which isn’t very often!)

I guess my favourite authors swap and change as well, but at the moment…

Sophie Kinsella – Shopaholic Series (for chic lit) and Charlaine Harris – The Sookie Stackhouse Novels.

I’m really enjoying Marissa Meyer’s ‘Lunar Chronicles’ at the moment too.

Russell T Davies – I am a self confessed Whovian, and I think the best Doctor Who episodes were written with Russell as the lead writer. I really admire the writers of the series, for their ability to weave plot twists and turns into the series so early on! For story arcing – the Doctor Who writing team have got to be some of the best!

6. What’s on your Wattpad shelf right now?

Well I have Jen Marie Wilde’s ‘Eva Wilde vs. the Zombie Apocalypse’, and ‘Eva Wilde vs. The Open Road’, of course!

I have Lilian Carmine’s ‘Joey & The Rebels’ having zoomed through her ‘Lost Boys’…

Several titles from a very talented teenager on Wattpad know as @KellyLM who found me after she read my story ‘LAILAH’. I have really enjoyed reading her work.

Several of @BritTheBookSlayer’s titles – she is after all Wattpad alumni.

And also enjoying @bnlfan ‘Flawed’ and @Phoenixraines ‘The Colour Of Love’ and ‘His Collar She Wore’.

7. What advice do you have for new Wattpad writers?

If you have a story to tell, don’t stop until you’ve told it!

8. How do you handle writer’s block?

Depends entirely on the day!

Sometimes I push through the pain, so to speak. Other days, I have to walk away from my MS and come back to it when I’ve had a little break.

9. What do you love most about writing fiction?

Anything can happen, and it usually does!

10. What’s the publishing process been like for you so far?

Amazing!! At the moment I am working with the most fantastic Editor, getting ‘LAILAH’ ready for publication next year. I most look forward to reading her encouraging comment bubbles that she leaves in the margins of her edits!

11. How did you celebrate when you found out your book was going to be published?

My friends told me to crack open the champagne! But as I’ve said, I’m very British so I cracked out the teapot instead and treated myself to some chocolate Hob-Nobs!

12. Where can readers find your book and when will it be published?

‘LAILAH’ the first book in The Styclar Saga is still currently on Wattpad, and you can read the unedited version there.

The book will be published through Feiwel and Friends in Fall 2014.

The following two books in the Saga will be released in 2015 and 2016.
